About community health profiles

Overview

We have developed a series of evidence summaries focusing on specific communities of interest, called ‘community health profiles’.

The profiles are based on:

  • religion
  • ethnicity
  • disability
  • sexual orientation
  • gender identity

They provide an insight of the inequalities (health needs) within the target community through desktop analysis of published evidence, grey literature and population survey data.

The community health profiles support the Public Health Division’s work to improve the understanding of the diverse communities of Birmingham.

You can find more information about the profiles and the full reports on the community health profiles homepage.

Objectives

There are common objectives for each of the profiles, which are:

  • to identify and summarise the physical health, mental health, lifestyle, behavioural and wider determinants of health-related issues affecting the specific community both nationally and locally
  • to collate and present this information to align with the key priority areas identified in the Health and Wellbeing Strategy for Birmingham 2022 to 2030
  • to engage with the local communities on the evidence found and any gaps
  • to promote these summaries for local authority and wider system use for community and service development
  • to empower communities, by providing them with a summary of health inequalities, which can be used to advocate for change across local systems to improve outcomes

Developing the community health profiles

To help you understand the community health profile programme, we have created a short video which provides an overview of:

  • evidence reports in Public Health
  • aims and objectives of the community health profiles
  • research methodology and profile development
  • key data sources in the profiles
  • available resources

You can switch on subtitles once you have started to play the video. A menu will appear on the video screen.
