Health and wellbeing strategy
The Health and Wellbeing Strategy, Creating a Bolder, Healthier City, is our high-level plan for reducing health inequalities and improving health and wellbeing in Birmingham. Led by the Birmingham Health and Wellbeing Board, our vision is to create a city where everyone can make choices that empower them to be happy and healthy.
Our strategy has been shaped over the last three years, including public consultation in 2021. Learn more about the consultation and what We Asked, You Said, We Did.
Creating a Bolder, Healthier City contains five core themes alongside three life course themes. It is underpinned by our priority of Closing the Gap and reducing health inequalities highlighted and exacerbated by the COVID-19 pandemic.
Measuring our Impact
The Health and Wellbeing Board's strategy builds upon the Joint Strategic Needs Assessment (JSNA).
Within each core theme and across the life course, there are a series of indicators for reporting to the Health and Wellbeing Board (Thematic Indicators). Many of these underpin longer-term indicators that will change over many years: Headline Indicators.
Many of these indicators will take many years to change. Nonetheless, they will allow the Health and Wellbeing Board to measure the impact of the strategy over the next five to eight years. These indicators are a way of monitoring whether we are truly achieving the level of change to impact citizens' lives at scale and in a sustained way.
The chosen indicators have been used to create the Joint Health and Wellbeing Strategy Indicator Dashboard hosted on the Birmingham City Observatory.

Annual reviews
Each year an annual review of the health and wellbeing strategy will be published. This review will showcase the progress of the health and wellbeing board, its forums, and partner organisations against the strategy’s ambitions.
It will also include a comprehensive update of all the strategy’s indicators to measure this progress.
The first Annual Review covers the first full year of the strategy’s delivery (May 2022 – May 2023) and is available to download.
