Student Population community health profile

Overview

The 16 to 24 Student Population community health profile has identified and summarised the national and local evidence relating to the health, lifestyle behaviours and wider determinants of health that affect the aged 16 to 24 student population.

Although the focus of this report was health inequalities among the aged 16 to 24 student population in Birmingham, the limited available information on health inequalities has resulted in data being used from the UK and internationally where available.

Community definition

A student was defined as a learner who is completing a course of study in an educational institution. This profile will focus on students aged 16 to 24 years, however the education sector in the UK is vast, and many people will be enrolled in study who fall outside of this age range such as adults returning to learning, parents, and practitioners.

Population size

Population size estimates presented are for Birmingham only and have used a range of datasets to identity the target population:

  • Level 3 qualifications (state funded only): 7,903 (2021 to 2022)
  • Apprenticeships: 1,410 aged under 19 years, 3,330 aged 19 to 24 years (2022 to 2023)
  • Higher education (enrolled at a Birmingham institution): 74,650 UK students, 18,005 non-UK students (2020 to 2021)
