Arab community health profile
Overview
The Arab community health profile has identified and summarised the national and local evidence relating to the health, lifestyle behaviours and wider determinants of health that affect the Arab community.
Although the focus of this report was health inequalities among the Arab community in Birmingham, the limited available information on health inequalities has resulted in data being used from the UK and internationally where available.
Community definition
The term ‘Arab’ describes a cultural and linguistic group of people who often speak Arabic and, to an extent, have a shared culture and history. In the modern day, the Arab world can be divided into 22 countries, known as the ‘Arab League’.
Within this community health profile, the Arab population was defined by the census 2021 category on ethnic category ‘Other ethnic group: Arab’.
In resources where ‘Arab’ has not been included as an ethnic group, data has been extracted from Arab countries as an approximate.
Population size
Population size estimates have been taken from the 2021 census for England and Wales, using data by ethnic group (20 category dataset).
- England and Wales: 331,844 (0.6% of the total population)
- Birmingham: 20,485 (1.8% of the total population)
