Sikh community health profile

Overview

The Sikh community health profile has identified and summarised the national and local evidence concerning the health, lifestyle behaviours and wider determinants of health that affect the Sikh community.

Although the focus of this report was health inequalities among the Sikh community in Birmingham, the limited available information on health inequalities has resulted in data being used from the UK and internationally where available.

Community definition

Within this community health profile, the Sikh population was defined by the census 2021 category on religion ‘Sikh’.

Population size

Population size estimates have been taken from the 2021 census for England and Wales, using the 10 category dataset for religion.

• England and Wales: 524,140 (0.88% of the total population)
• Birmingham: 33,126 (2.9% of the total population)

Additionally in the 2021 census 288 category dataset for ethnic group, 4,842 people in Birmingham (0.4% of the total population) listed their ethnic group as ‘Other ethnic group: Sikh’.
