Lesbian community engagement

Birmingham LGBT logo. Black font on a light pink background.From October 2022 to October 2023 Birmingham Public Health partnered with Birmingham LGBT to disseminate the findings from the Lesbian community health profile and co-produce solutions to tackle identified health inequalities.

The project from Birmingham LGBT focused on the following key areas:

Training for healthcare workers

Delivery of training sessions for GPs and other primary care workers on the lesbian community, the learning outcomes of the sessions were:

  1. Learn an understanding of language and terminology around sexual orientation and gender diversity
  2. Develop and understanding of the local landscape of lesbian community health, drawing upon the ‘Lesbian community health profile’
  3. Consider co-produced solutions to the health disparities affecting this community
  4. Get an introduction to minority stress theory and its impact on health inequalities
  5. Exploration of the ways to make an organisation more inclusive

Promotion of screening uptake

A targeted social media campaign to encourage lesbian women to attend breast and cervical cancer screening programmes - #screeningwithpride.

Dance classes

Hosted free dance classes for LGBTQ+ women at Fabric Studios, delivered by Dominus Von Vexo.

The dance classes focused on a variety of dance styles, including Ballroom, Latin, Salsa, and Cha Cha.
