Overview
The Pacific Islands community health profile has identified and summarised the national and local evidence concerning the health, lifestyle behaviours and wider determinants of health that affect the Pacific Islander community.
Although the focus of this report was health inequalities among the Pacific Islander community in Birmingham, the limited available information on health inequalities has resulted in data being used from the UK and internationally, where available.
Community definition
Within this community health profile, the Pacific Islander community is made up of people from 3 subregions:
- Melanesia
- Micronesia
- Polynesia
Within the report, the focus countries included:
- Fiji
- Kiribati
- Papua New Guinea
- Nauru
- Somao
- Solomon Islands
- Tonga
- Tuvalu
- Vanuatu
Population size
Population size estimates have been taken from the 2021 census for England and Wales, using the 190 category dataset for country of birth, under the ‘Antarctica and Oceania: Oceania’ sub-category which included Fiji, Other Oceania and Papua New Guinea.
- England and Wales: 12,395 (<0.1% of the total population).
- Birmingham: 161 (<0.1% of the total population).
