Jobs and training opportunities
Birmingham City Council’s Employment Access Team (EAT) worked alongside the partner contractor who built the Alexander Stadium, to promote and offer jobs and training to the local community. To find out more about these schemes and what opportunities are available more broadly, visit the EAT webpage.
Supporting local
Birmingham is brimming with independent businesses and talented residents. Our contractor, McLaughlin and Harvey, worked in partnership with Finditinbirmingham to promote local supply chain opportunities. For more information about broader current opportunities for local businesses, including SMEs and third sector organisations, visit their supplier page on Finditinbirmingham.
Working with schools
Our partner contractor has engaged with local schools, focusing on Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics (STEM subjects). This included developing an understanding of construction and engineering as well as other wide-ranging subjects. Students had the chance to explore career routes and meet with engineers and designers.
Case study
In 2015, Chris O’Hagan joined McLaughlin & Harvey, the main contractor on the Alexander Stadium redevelopment, through the company’s undergraduate trainee scheme.
The scheme, which is fully funded, helps trainees gain a nationally recognised qualification as well as invaluable hands on experience. After starting as a Trainee Site Manager, Chris was given the opportunity to experience the different elements of construction to help strengthen his technical knowledge.
He had planned to rotate between the company’s different departments, but after starting on-site at Alexander Stadium as a Design Coordinator Chris found he loved his new role and asked to be remain in that position.
In the video below he talks about his experiences at the Alexander Stadium:
