Background
Alexander Stadium has provided a focal point for athletics on a regional, national and international level since the old stadium opened in 1976. Up until now, the stadium has only received one major upgrade (the construction of the Back Straight Stand in 2011).
The stadium has now been completely transformed into a world class sporting venue able to host major national and international events, as well as provide the best possible facilities for local sporting groups and athletics teams such as Birchfield Harriers.
The redevelopment of the stadium started in May 2020 and was completed in April 2022, as part of the wider regeneration of Perry Barr. The hugely successful staging of the Birmingham 2022 Commonwealth Games from 28 July to 8 August 2022 has sealed the stadium’s reputation and helped put Perry Barr and Birmingham on the world sporting map.
The improvements to Alexander Stadium will see enhanced facilities for the local community and existing tenants to use for generations to come and establish a new teaching base for Birmingham City University.
