The Weoley collection

The Weoley Collection at Weoley Castle Library was first created over twenty years ago by library staff Roy Clarke, Linda Barnett and David Hale. It contains photographs, maps, study guides and assorted ephemera relating to the Weoley Castle area and the historic Manor of Weoley. It is an archive of Weoley’s rich heritage and an asset to the local community, school children, students and researchers.

The collection is a valuable resource that documents the social and historical development of the area and an excellent starting point for local history projects and for people who want to explore Weoley’s past or reminisce over views of yesteryear.

The material has been collected from a number of sources which include community groups and local residents, The Library of Birmingham and local press cuttings.

The bulk of the collection is an archive of over 1,500 photographic images. Some of its highlights include:

• Castle Square
  The local shopping centre and the heart of the estate.
• Castle Site
  The ruins at Weoley Castle are over 700 years old and are the remains of the moated medieval manor house that once stood here.
• Farming and Rural Life
  The farms, the farmers, country life and rural views.
• The Canal
  The Dudley No. 2 Canal joined the Worcester-Birmingham Canal at Selly Oak.

The entire collection is available to view in the library. Customers can order high quality copies of photographs from the collection (subject to copyright) in a range of sizes, all at reasonable prices.
