Spitfire island
As part of the area's regeneration, an arts initiative was established which has led to the installation of five pieces of public art within the area. One of the most recognisable pieces to be created as a result of the initiative is the Sentinel sculpture by Tim Tolkien, great-nephew of J.R.R. Tolkien. It shows three Spitfires peeling off up into the air in different directions. The half-scale Spitfires are made of aluminium, with curving steel supporting beams which act as vapour trails. It captures the dynamics of the Spitfire in flight and commemorates the nearby Castle Bromwich factory where most of Britain's wartime Spitfires were built.
It was erected on the A452 roundabout located between the Castle Vale estate and the Jaguar factory in 2000.
The roundabout was subsequently renamed "Spitfire Island".
