Level 2 award - learn skills for teaching independent travel

About the award

The Birmingham City Council independent travel training (BCCITT) programme works with students and schools to support independent travel skills.

The programme also offers an accredited Level 2 Teaching Travel Training qualification to other professionals across the UK.

The training covers a variety of topics relating to independent travel, and covers 3 modules.

The Birmingham trainer course has been recognised with the Open Awards badge of excellence and has equipped teams, and other agencies, in Birmingham to deliver their own independent travel training (ITT) programme.

The course tutor has twenty years’ experience of managing ITT programmes across the UK, and travel training young people and adults.

We offer the training for individual learners and up to group of 10.

Registration 

The course talks place over a 2-day period. The venue will be confirmed by BCCITT and the organisation making the booking.

Over the 2 days there will be lots of discussion, written work, and a practical activity session looking at a training route with one of our experience trainers.

When the training has been confirmed, BCCITT will send out preliminary material which includes:

  • a registration form for learners
  • a short questionnaire to check the suitability of the course based on the learner's level of experience of travel training/SEND/teaching independent travel

This information will be used to:

  • register the learner with Open Awards, the awarding body
  • highlight any skill/knowledge gaps which may need more time to learn

When the learner has been registered, they will receive an email confirming their registration number, and outlining the course details.

The modules

The course comprises 3 modules, or units, worth 8 credits. The nodules and cover most situations that may happen delivering travel training. Safeguarding and route assessments are included.

The modules covered are:

  • understanding and implementing the processes for independent travel training
  • problem solving when delivering ITT
  • understanding autism

Learners will need to complete a portfolio of evidence which will be set and marked by the education provider, and externally quality assured by Open Awards.

Candidates must provide sufficient evidence that they have the required knowledge, skills and understanding of the assessment criteria and that it is their own work.

How much it costs

The cost of the course is £450 per person.

This includes everything from the learner registration to the certificate awarded at the end of the course.
