Alexander Stadium contractor McLaughlin & Harvey launches You Matter Communities to provide resources for the local area.

You Matter Communities, an initiative by McLaughlin & Harvey who are lead contractor for the redevelopment of Alexander Stadium, has been launched.

The scheme will provide support to local communities, such as volunteer time, small grants and the use of excess materials from the construction process.

Paul Griffen, McLaughlin & Harvey Managing Director, said: “We are very proud to launch You Matter Communities and make a positive contribution to Birmingham’s communities.

“You Matter Communities asks the local community where they think our resources are best placed so that we can actively support local organisations already making a difference and contribute to the Alexander Stadium legacy.”

Support is at hand through the You Matter Communities TimeBank, an innovative way of matching skills from the construction team with local social enterprises and community organisations.

Birmingham-based social enterprises and community organisations can apply for volunteer support. Volunteers could help complete a community project or support activities that inspire young people or help develop employability skills.

To avoid waste and protect the environment, the You Matter Communities ResourceBank offers community projects free access to excess and unused materials from the construction of Alexander Stadium. This includes off-cuts, over-ordered materials, salvaged materials or seconds.

The You Matter Communities Fund will offer small grants of up to £1,000 to community groups to help people come together and make a difference locally. Types of projects that will be funded are:

  • Buying equipment and supplies that support local community groups to run activities such as sports kit, specialised medical equipment, art and crafts materials, gardening tools and plants, or litter pickers;
  • Developing or maintaining an outdoor space such as a play area, allotment, park, or wildlife area;
  • Running a community event or activity that brings people together, such as a community clean-up day or street party;
  • Supporting seasonal activities, such as a Christmas meal for the homeless or a Diwali celebration event for the community.

Cllr Ian Ward, Leader of Birmingham City Council, which owns and operates the stadium, said: “We are thrilled with the proactive approach being taken by McLaughlin & Harvey to support local communities as part of the construction process.

“We encourage local stakeholders to engage in the You Matter Communities initiative in order to make the most of the opportunities available and contribute to the wider legacy impacts of the Alexander Stadium redevelopment.”

Any Birmingham-based community organisations and social enterprises can apply for ‘You Matter Communities’ resources.
