Diagnosis referral and assessment process
Referral
Diagnosis of dementia is done by referral to Birmingham and Solihull Mental Health NHS Foundation Trust (BSMHFT).
A referral can be made by your:
- GP
- social worker
- district nurse
- advanced nurse practitioner
Nurses at BSMHFT will refer you to either:
CMHTs provide the same service but for more complex or challenging cases.
The Memory Assessment Service provides assessment and diagnosis services at different places in Birmingham.
Assessment
The assessment process is based on several criteria, such as:
- your medical history
- formal memory testing
- scans

How long diagnosis takes
The time it takes for a dementia diagnosis varies from person to person, the type of dementia and on the different types of assessments.
