Timeline and works
A34 Highways works - phase one
The first phase of works started in June 2020 and were completed in December 2020.
This phase focused on:
- Widening parts of Harrier Way and the A34, with a temporary road layout created to ensure safety.
- Diverting utilities and laying new drainage at Harrier Way and Aston Lane/Wellington Road
- Structural works for the new bridge at Birchfield Island
A34 Highways works - phase two
The second phase of works were completed on schedule in May 2021. They included:
- Temporary works to enable the new traffic management – completed January 2021;
- Dismantling the flyover in stages – completed February 2021;
- Widening carriageways and footways;
- Structural works to the new bridge at Birchfield Island; and
- Infrastructure works throughout the area.
The Perry Barr flyover was successfully dismantled between 5 and 8 February 2021.
A34 Highways works – New Birchfield Island Bridge
As well as the above, a range of other significant works were undertaken including:
- Lifting of new beams across underpass for new bridge in Birchfield Island in July 2022.
- Completion of significant tarmacing to new sections of carriageway;
- New Public Realm in areas along Wellington Road, Aston Lane;
- New Cycleway, footway and Public Realm south of Birchfield Island;
- Completion of the new signalised junction outside One Stop
- Completion of the new signalised junction at Birchfield
