European Parliamentary Elections
As the UK has been part of the European Union, elections to the European Parliament are held every 5 years. The date is predetermined by the Secretary of State.
European Elections are usually held in June, and are often combined with any local elections being held, meaning that in these circumstances, the local elections would be held a month later than normal.
Birmingham, along with 29 other local authorities which make up the West Midlands Region, elects 7 MEPs to represent the region.
The last European Parliamentary Elections were held in 2014. However, with the 2016 referendum indicating our exit from the European Union, there may be no further European Parliamentary elections.
However, following recent developments in the ongoing withdrawal negotiations, it has become necessary to prepare for the upcoming election, which would be held on Thursday 23 May 2019 if needed.
The count was conducted on the evening of Sunday 26 May 2019 and results were declared.
