Centenary Square project wins prestigious award
Birmingham City Council scooped its first award for the successful redevelopment of Centenary Square last week.
The project - designed by Graeme Massie Architects and delivered with construction partners Bouygues UK – was named Construction Project of the Year at the Insider West Midlands Property Awards on Friday (8 November 2019).
The redevelopment of Centenary Square was shortlisted alongside six other projects, including HSBC’s new UK headquarters at 1 Centenary Square, The Lansdowne in Edgbaston, Arden Quarter in Stratford-upon-Avon, Brownsover Medical Centre in Rugby, the Centre for Advanced Low-Carbon Propulsion Systems at Coventry University, and the Sports and Wellness Hub at University of Warwick.
Phil Edwards, assistant director for inclusive growth at Birmingham City Council, said: “It’s fantastic that just a few months after the new look Centenary Square was opened as a world-class public space, it’s already gaining industry recognition – against some very tough competition.
“This win is thanks to the architect’s vision and the fantastic work by both the city council and its contractors in bringing that vision to life. I hope it’s the first of many.”
Centenary Square’s new look was unveiled on 3 July 2019, nearly five years after Birmingham City Council launched a competition to redesign one of the city’s biggest squares, which attracted 185 entries from more than 30 countries.
The winning entry, designed by Edinburgh-based firm Graeme Massie Architects, includes a mix of trees, small plants alongside a new reflection pool and integrated seating.
