Statement on Birmingham mosque attacks
Statement by Cllr John Cotton, Cabinet Member for Social Inclusion, Community Safety and Equalities, on the recent attacks on mosques across the city.
“Like all right-thinking Brummies, I am appalled and disgusted by the attacks on mosques in our city overnight.
“The people responsible are thugs and criminals who need to be caught and punished. They do not speak for the people of Birmingham and their attempts to intimidate, threaten and divide the communities of our city will fail.
“Today, I’m working with my council colleagues to support and assist the police in their efforts to find those responsible. I’d urge anyone who has any information to contact the police, via 101 any time, or Crimestoppers anonymously on 0800 555 111. We’re also ensuring that we are supporting the Muslim communities of our city, who will be feeling understandably shocked and concerned, especially with Friday prayers taking place tomorrow.
“The council and the police are contacting mosques to provide help, advice and support and we will also be liaising closely with community and faith leaders – not just to show solidarity , but to ensure we are taking every step possible to ensure people can worship freely and without fear.
“Hate has no place in this city and never will.”
