Average speed cameras installed on Middleway corridor

The cameras have been sited along a 2.8km section of the road from Five Ways to Haden Circus, covering Islington Row Middleway, Lee Bank Middleway and Belgrave Middleway.

The Belgrave Middleway underpass was the scene of a fatal collision in the early hours of 17 December 2017, in which six people died.

Following the accident, the council received a petition signed by thousands of people calling for safety measures on that stretch of road. After awaiting the completion of a police investigation and subsequent coroner’s inquest, Birmingham City Council announced that average speed cameras would be installed to enforce the existing 40mph limit.

Once the cameras have been in place for 12 months, an evaluation will be carried out to assess their effectiveness and further options will then be looked at if required.

Councillor Waseem Zaffar, Cabinet Member for Transport and Environment at Birmingham City Council, said: “This was a truly devastating accident which resulted in the loss of six lives and shook the city. Just one life lost on our roads is one too many.

“Safety on Birmingham’s busy road network is paramount, so these cameras will play an important role in helping to keep our city moving safely.

“However, these cameras are not solution on their own. We all have a responsibility where road safety is concerned and I would urge everyone to show consideration to their fellow road users at all times.

“We all have choices to make and if you choose to break the speed limit then you can expect to face the consequences. There can be no excuses.”
