Driver fined for transporting injured sheep
Birmingham City Council's environment health team successfully prosecuted a Shropshire man for failing to transport an animal that was fit for the journey, at Birmingham Magistrates Court today (27/9)
Chris Taylor (28), of The Hobbins, Bridgnorth, who pleaded guilty to the offence under the Welfare of Animals (Transport) (England) Order 2006, was ordered to pay £495 - including a £165 fine, £300 in court costs and a £30 victim surcharge.
The prosecution was brought after the Animal and Plant Health Agency reported an incident which occurred on 15 February 2018, as an official veterinarian overseeing a delivery to A J Meats Ltd in Charles Henry Street, Highgate, had found a live sheep lying down in the transport lorry ready to be unloaded.
The sheep had a broken hind leg and was unable to bear weight on it, and closer inspection revealed extensive bruising up to the knee joint. The official vet stated the animal was not fit for transport and had been exposed to avoidable pain and suffering.
