BikeFest returns to Birmingham

Families are being invited to get pedalling at the HSBC BikeFest 2016, the free cycling festival which returns to Birmingham for its second year on Sunday, September 18.

Organised in partnership with Birmingham Cycle Revolution, the event takes place in Victoria Square from 9am to 4pm and aims to encourage and inspire families in Birmingham to get active through cycling.

In addition to some world-class bike performances, this year’s event will also include a 2km closed road family ride, starting and finishing at Victoria Square.

The world’s only pop-up velodrome – StreetVelodrome – will give visitors a chance to set their own personal best on the track, while Action Sports Tour will be displaying amazing cycling stunts and with flatland BMX riders also giving master-classes in skills and tricks.

There will also be a Strider Adventure Zone for toddlers and specialist cycling retailers for the real enthusiasts. Additionally, the event will include a range of stalls offering visitors a taste of Birmingham’s best food and drink.

Councillor Ian Ward, Deputy Leader of Birmingham City Council, said: “Last year’s inaugural BikeFest was a great success so I am excited that it is returning to Birmingham for a second year, this time in the more central city centre location of Victoria Square.

“HSBC BikeFest 2016 really has something for everyone, regardless of age or cycling ability. I’d like to encourage everyone to bring their bike and make the most of the car-free city centre roads, as for one day only they are reserved just for cyclists, so why not bring the whole family.

“Not only is cycling a great way to keep active and fit, it is also an environmentally friendly way to travel around the city, helping to reduce the number of cars on our roads. I hope that as many people as possible will take this opportunity to come along, find out more and have a fantastic day out.”
