Help with food

For residents that are struggling to pay for food there is help out there.

If you are responsible for a child

As a parent or carer, you may benefit from:

  • Baby Aid Birmingham
  • free school meals
  • the Holiday Activity and Food Programme
  • NHS Healthy Start

For information about these provisions, visit our help with food for families page.

Birmingham Food Justice Network

The Birmingham Food Justice Network Map has been created to help you find nearby options in your local area.

The map includes foodbanks and other options such as:

  • food clubs/food pantries - where you can get cheaper food
  • community cafés - where you can get a free or cheap hot meal

Food providers marked with a blue spot on the map are where citizens can freely attend to access food. Check the opening hours for each site.

Food providers marked with a green spot are Trussell Trust or other foodbanks. A referral or food voucher from the council or another agency is needed before food can be accessed from these sites.

Foodbanks

We understand that using a foodbank can be daunting. The foodbanks across Birmingham are staffed by volunteers who will make you feel welcome.

Accessing foodbanks

You can attend many of the foodbanks without a referral.

For foodbanks in the Trussell Trust Network, you will need to obtain a food voucher from the council. You can do this by completing our food voucher request form.

Find out more about using a foodbank and how to apply on our foodbank web page.
