Governance

The governance theme refers to actions aimed at “ensuring an enabling environment for effective action in cities, such as: to facilitate collaboration across city agencies and departments, to strengthen urban stakeholder participation, to identify, map and support local and grassroots initiatives and to develop or revise urban food policies”.

Social and economic equity

The social and economic equity theme captures interventions addressing upstream inequalities in the food system to ensure access to healthy and sustainable food for all citizens such as employment and education/training, as well promoting community networks, social support and ensuring food availability.

Food production

The food production theme focusses on actions aimed at strengthening sustainable urban food production, from the supply of resources for urban gardens to supporting short food chains.

Food supply and distribution

The food supply and distribution theme describes interventions aimed at getting healthy affordable food to citizens, such as cash and food transfers, food banks, community food kitchens, food pantries, etc.

Food waste and recycling

The food waste and recycling theme focusses on addressing awareness of food loss and waste locally and/or recovering and redistributing food.

Approaches to addressing food insecurity: governance, social and economic equity, production, supply and distribution, waste and recycling.
