Demonstrations, protests and vigils in Birmingham

We recognise that there are times where people will want to use Birmingham’s public spaces to hold demonstrations, protests or vigils.

Telling us about your event early means we can share information with you.

Types of event

Demonstrations, protests and vigils are public events, which can be held for a number of reasons.

Demonstrations and protests

Demonstrations and protests are public events where people show their support or opposition to an issue.

They can include activities such as marches and rallies.

Vigils

Public vigils are gatherings where people come together to show support, remember or honour a person or event.

Vigils often involve activities such as lighting candles, holding moments of silence, or sharing speeches and prayers.

They are typically held in response to a significant event or to raise awareness about an issue.

Tell us about your demonstration, protest or vigil

While we do not regulate or approve such events, we will:

• aim to co-ordinate with the organisers of these events
• take into consideration everything taking place in the wider area
• help the organisers to make sure sure they have all of the relevant information to plan a safe event

Our public spaces can be very busy, especially in the city centre. You should check availability with us early in the planning process.

Public marches

By law, you must tell the police if you are planning to hold a public march.
