No gas or electricity
If the problem appears to affect only you and/or your immediate neighbours, you should contact your service provider.
The main suppliers are:
Electricity failure and safety
Phone 105 to report a power cut.
If the power goes off you can report this by calling 105 or visiting the Power Cut website. The website offers more information, including how to be prepared for power cuts and what to do if you have one.
During a power cut, keep freezers and refrigerators closed to reduce spoilage. Fridges will keep food cold for around 4 hours, and a full freezer will keep food frozen for around 48 hours.
Gas failure and safety
Phone 0800 111 999 for gas emergencies, including if you smell gas.
Unlike some explosions, the time lapse between awareness of a gas leak and it leading to an explosion can allow for evacuation – which may minimise or eliminate causalities.
If you suspect there has been a gas leak:
- do not smoke or light matches
- shut off the gas supply at source
- open doors and windows
- evacuate the building and immediate areas
