How we can help
Over time, your housing needs may change, and you might find yourself living in a property larger than you need. This can make it difficult to keep your home warm and to afford heating and electricity costs.
Whatever your reason for wanting a smaller property, if you’re moving from a house, maisonette, or flat to a property with at least one less bedroom, the Wise Move team can offer support and assistance with your move. We could also help cover some of the moving expenses, provided you leave your current property empty and in a condition ready for us to relet to a new tenant.
Types of support offered
Depending on your situation and the size of the property you are moving from and to, we may be able to help with things like:
- organising and paying for your removals
- decorating your new property
- providing curtains in your new property
- disconnecting and reconnecting your cooker and washing machine
- help cover the rent on your new home while we complete the necessary improvements
For those moving from our larger properties, we may also be able to help with providing new carpets, white goods and furniture items if the move means you will need to replace your old items.
For example, if you have a gas cooker but your new property only has an electric cooker point, or if your large sofa no longer fits in the smaller living room, we can help replace them. Whatever your needs, we can discuss how we can assist you once you have identified and secured a new property to move into.
Before receiving support
Before we can help, you need to find a smaller home to move to. This does not have to be a Birmingham City Council property, it can be with another local authority within the West Midlands or any of the West Midlands Housing Associations. Once you have been allocated a smaller home, with fewer bedrooms, we can discuss what package of support can be offered to you.
You may also want to consider moving into sheltered housing.
