Preparing for moving out

Moving out visit

As soon as we know you are moving out of a residential property, you will receive an email or text message asking you to book a visit.

Once you have received this email or text, you can book a visit online or by phone.

Online

To book a moving out visit online, you need to sign in to or create a BRUM account.

Once you have signed in, you will arrive at your account page. Scroll down until you see the 'Housing' section and select 'Other housing online services'.

Read the information under 'Book a moving out visit' and then select 'Book a moving out visit'.

By phone

To book a moving out visit by phone, you need to phone 0121 303 5054, option 4.

After you have booked a visit

Once a visit is booked, our moving out officer will contact you.

It is important that before you leave the property, one of our moving out officers meet with you to:

  • help you feel comfortable about leaving the property
  • let us know what work the property needs before the next tenant moves in

We will tell you if you need to make any repairs to the property before you move out. If you do not make these repairs, you will not be able to rejoin the waiting list for a council property in the future.

Things to do

Clearing and repairs

You should clear your property of your belongings.

Make any repairs that are your responsibility. If we asked you to make repairs, you must do this. You can contact us to check what repairs you are responsible for.

Rent

Make sure your rent is paid up to date.

Utilities

Tell utility companies that you will be moving. On the last day of your tenancy, take meter readings. It is a good idea to take a photo as proof.

Improvements you have made

If you have made improvements to your property, such as putting in new doors, you can take this with you. You must replace them with items that:

  • Are of the same standard as the original
  • Are up to regulation standard

You will have discussed this during your moving out talk.

If improvements are left that we have to remove or replace as they are not up to regulation standards, we may charge you.

Tell people your new address

You will need to tell people your new address. These include:

  • Your GP
  • Council tax service
  • Banks, credit card companies and so on
  • The Driver and Vehicle Licensing Agency (DVLA)
  • Department for Work and Pensions
  • Insurance companies
  • Your or your dependents school, college or university
  • Utilities
