What to consider
Being a home educator for your child is a big responsibility, which can take a lot of your time and energy. Before making a decision, think very carefully and consider the following:
1. If you’re having problems with your child’s school, have you tried to fix them?
If you’re having problems with your child’s school, teacher or head teacher, consider contacting the school’s governing body or looking at alternative local schools.
2. What do different subject areas involve?
For example, what does mathematics involve apart from number work? What local sports facilities are available? And so on.
3. What are the potential costs of home education?
There’s no funding available for home educators, but you will still have costs for books, paper, educational visits, equipment (including computer), etc. You should also make sure that your child has social contact with other children.
4. Have you done all the necessary research and planning?
Research and plan for your child’s learning before you remove their name from the school. Once the school has removed your child’s name from their Register it may be very difficult to find another school place if you change your mind.
5. Have you kept your options open?
Your child’s needs change at different ages and stages. We’re always happy to help you find a school place. Make the most of all support and information that’s available.
