What is green social prescribing?

Green social prescribing involves supporting people to get involved with nature-based activities.

These activities can improve both mental and physical well-being.

Social prescribing link workers, and other trusted professionals, can direct people to community groups and resources for both practical and emotional support.

Green social prescribing encompasses green and blue activities, such as:

  • local walking programs,
  • community gardening initiatives,
  • conservation projects,
  • green gyms,
  • open water swimming,
  • outdoor arts and cultural events.

These activities can be recommended by link workers and trusted professionals. They can be stand alone activities or in addition to other forms of support - such as housing or financial assistance, tailored to each person's specific requirements and situation.

Birmingham has over 600 green spaces, ranging from small fields to large nature reserves, interconnected by canals, rivers and walkways.
