Flowers and lawns

An image of Thorpe's vision for 'Leisure Gardens' with more flowers and shrubs in colour at the 20th International Leisure Gardeners' Congress, Birmingham 1976.
Thorpe recommended, "That every leisure gardener should be strongly and repeatedly urged, both by his association and by his local authority, to make his plot attractive by incorporating flowers or flowering shrubs at strategic points within and around the plot, especially where it meets a main pathway through the site." However, his recommendations were not always welcomed by plot holders who preferred vegetables to flowers.
