Golden eagle
-
Birds of America was the creation of naturalist John James Audubon. It features 435 colour engravings of every American bird species. The eagle's unusual position is because of Audubon's desire to portray all the birds at life-size, and also explains why the finished volume measures 1.3m by 2m when opened.
