Considered to be the first recruiting song of the First World War. Like many acts during this period F V St Clair performed in conjunction with recruiting authorities. War news would be incorporated in between variety acts, usually followed by a song like 'Follow the Drum' which had the effect of inspiring men to volunteer. Also, according to a play bill for Leeds Hippodrome, dated 14 September 1914, 'Follow the Drum' had " already raised about £100 for the National Relief Funds by the sale of this great war chorus song".
