“Fair winds waft you through the year”
Boys as young as 13 could leave home and join the navy as boy sailors. A naval career was a respectable one, with relatively good pay compared to farm or factory work. But life at sea was incredibly harsh; with poor food, strict discipline with the very real prospect of injury or death in combat.
