This fashion plate shows examples of formal evening dress for men in the early Victorian period. It was fashionable at this time for tailcoats to be worn open, in order to display the gentleman's waistcoat, shirt and cravat.
Two differing styles of pantaloon are shown; the standing figure wears pantaloons to the ankle, the seated figure wears them cut at calf length.
