Warwickshire pageant

This is one of eight photographs in the Library of Cultures exhibition depicting local and international folk customs at taken at the beginning of the twentieth century by Benjamin Stone. Stone was based in Erdington and as well as being an early pioneer of photography, was also a collector, a politician and an industrialist.
His photographs form a large collection capturing images of local life, national scenes and vanishing folk customs. They are an important source for the study of visual culture, but to modern eyes they might also make us wonder about how posed or constructed they were and whether they tell us more about Stone’s point of view than the people he was documenting.
