The verse reads:
"Pretty little maiden!
Tell me why, I pray,
This sweet rose you being me
From my friend to-day:
Surely 'tis the holly
Blooms at Christmas-tide,
And the crimson roses
Are for Summer's pride?
But the maiden answers:
Is it hard to see?
Roses stand for love,
