Cardinal John Henry Newman (1801 to 1890)

Originally an Anglican priest and leader of the Oxford Movement. He converted to Catholicism, rising to the rank of Cardinal. Founder of the Oratory School, dubbed 'the catholic Eton' at the time. Resident in Birmingham for the last forty years of his life.
In 2010, during a visit to Birmingham, Pope Benedict XVI proclaimed Newman's beatification after a miracle was attributed to the Cardinal.
