The fashions (1865)
-
Image of a fashion plate engraved and hand coloured for 'The Englishwoman's Domestic Magazine' in September 1865.
Before the Bank Holidays Act 1871, it was really only wealthy Victorians who were able to visit Britain's new seaside towns for days of pleasure. Fashion plates gave middle class women direction in how to dress for this genteel new pastime. In this image we see a design for a striking promenade dress with a matching red paletot, an elegant summer cape.
