Noticeboard - 27 April 2023

Welcome to this week's noticeboard containing important information on the Sudan conflict, and various articles and opportunities for booking onto training courses and events. Wishing you all an enjoyable bank holiday weekend!

Sudan

Schools will be aware of the conflict in Sudan, which has meant that some British nationals have been unable to leave as Khartoum International Airport is closed. 

The British Government is currently running evacuation flights to help British nationals to leave Sudan.

Where schools are made aware of any children on roll who may be in Sudan and unable to return, schools should notify the local authority by emailing the Education Safeguarding team with the circumstances of the concerns, what contact they have had with the family and include the following details:

  • child and parents’ names
  • dates of birth,
  • name of school
  • Birmingham address
  • details of other family members including siblings and their schools
  • address and contact details for the family in Sudan if you have them
  • dates of travel
  • other family contacts on your system such as extended family members

Further advice on the current evacuation arrangements from the Foreign and Commonwealth Office can be found here: www.gov.uk/foreign-travel-advice/sudan, and which should be shared with the family if at all possible.

There is also a telephone number for British nationals in Sudan which is: +44 1908 516 666 - Select option 2 for consular services for British nationals.

Statutory Compliance Return 2023 Extension

The deadline for the Annual Statutory Compliance Return has been extended until Friday,12 May 2023. This is a final opportunity for schools to complete the return if they have not already done so. The return can be accessed by following this link

Once the deadline for returns has passed, a sample of schools will be selected for an audit of their compliance which will be undertaken by Schools Safety Services. Any school failing to submit a return will be first on the list to be audited.

Schools Dual Funding Initiative 2023/24

Education Infrastructure is pleased to launch the Dual Funding Initiative 2023/24. Community, Foundation and Voluntary Controlled schools may apply.

This is an opportunity for schools to apply to the Local Authority for funding to assist with key building priorities.

School Organisation – Statutory Proposals and Consultation

Birmingham City Council has published the following Statutory Proposals for the following schools:

Kings Heath Boys School:

  • Proposal to change the school from single sex (boys) to co-educational (mixed)
  • Effective September 2024
  • Details with a complete proposal document and online survey available online: Birmingham Be Heard - Kings Heath Boys School

Gilbertstone Primary School:

  • Proposal to change the lower age limit from 3 years to become 4 years
  • Results in removal of nursery provision
  • Effective September 2023

All comments on these proposals must be received no later than Thursday, 18 May 2023.

Health and Safety and Wellbeing Subscription Renewals 2023-2024

As in previous years, subscriptions to the following packages have been auto-renewed for those schools who subscribed during 2022/2023:

  • Education Safety Services
  • Educational Visits
  • Employee Assistance Programme 
  • CLEAPSS

If schools no longer wish to subscribe to these services, please email schoolsafety@birmingham.gov.uk by Friday, 5 May 2023, confirming which service needs to be cancelled. Please be aware, if a notification of cancellation is not received by the deadline, it will be assumed that schools wish to continue procuring these services and will be invoiced accordingly.

Please note, Local Authority schools cannot opt out of CLEAPSS as it is a requirement that all Local Authority schools be subscribed. CLEAPSS is based on the number of 5–19-year-olds within each school. Pupil numbers have been obtained from the School Spring Census.

Office for National Statistics – Child Abuse Prevalence Survey

Deadline for completion: Wednesday, 10 May 2023

The Office for National Statistics (ONS) is keen to receive feedback from all child protection and safeguarding professionals on safeguarding processes for children and young people, by completing an online survey

The survey which will take up to 30-40 minutes to complete can be found here: Child Abuse Prevalence Survey.

The research team is also hosting focus groups scheduled to take place in June, and  Professionals can sign up here if they are interested in participating, or require further information: Focus Group Participation

Growing, Belonging and Compassion Workshops and Conference

Working with leading professionals in belonging strategy, The Staff College has developed an innovative programme consisting of three 90-minute interconnected online workshops and a face-to-face Conference to help education leaders grow belonging and compassion in schools and communities.

  • Workshop 1 – Wednesday, 28 June 2023 – Why do schools need to grow a sense of belonging?
  • Workshop 2 – Tuesday, 12 September 2023 – Why is it important to build compassionate leadership?
  • Workshop 3 – Wednesday, 18 October 2023 – Why do we need to develop local belonging strategies?
  • Conference – Tuesday, 21 November 2023 – How can schools and local systems work together to create the conditions for school belonging?

You’re Invited! The Children’s Society’s Disrupting Exploitation Forum

Tuesday, 9 May 2023: 10:00-15:00 – Birmingham Repertory Theatre, 6 Centenary Square, Birmingham B1 2EP

Join this FREE youth-focused event (including lunch!) for a day of insight and innovation, working towards keeping young people safe from exploitation.

The event is aimed at both young people (aged 10-17) and professionals. It’s a youth-led conference, so it’s important young people attend from schools, projects and communities to share their thoughts and ideas, and for professionals to listen and to be inquisitive.

With a jam packed agenda including presentations and interactive workshops, it’s going to be a great day!
