Proud to be part of the Opening Ceremony

On the eve of the Commonwealth Games, Sue Grant, a volunteer cast member at the Birmingham 2022 Opening Ceremony, writes about her excitement and pride about being involved in the ceremony...

You could say my wish is going to be granted tomorrow evening!

On 28 July, I will proudly perform at the Birmingham 2022 Opening Ceremony – I can’t believe I’m actually writing these words.

I’m one of 2,000 people who successfully applied to be part of the volunteer cast at the Alexander Stadium.

For me this is a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to say I was involved in the biggest event this city has ever hosted and definitely something to show and tell my grandchildren!

This journey began when I saw an advert requesting for people to volunteer through one of the city council’s internal bulletins earlier this year.

My ‘day job’ is a Senior Practitioner in the Adult Safeguarding Team at Birmingham City Council so this a world away from my normal working life. Although, I’ve always had a passion for amateur dramatics and often lead in the team Christmas quizzes and office away days.

I went to an audition at Edgbaston and two months later I was offered a role in the Opening Ceremony. To say I was over the moon is an understatement!

I can’t give too much away about the ceremony, but I will divulge that I’m part of the floats team. We’ve been rehearsing at a private venue and I can tell you it’s been hard going at times. I’ve attended 15 sessions which can last up to five hours at a time!

I’m just so excited – I hope you all enjoy the show!
